China: The Innovation Gap
Challenges & Opportunities

Sandra Elliot

Speakers:
Sandra Elliott (International Development, Cardiff University)
Dr Li Yu (International Centre for Planning Research, Cardiff University)
Michael Thomas & Wu Chen (International Business Wales, Welsh Assembly Government)

Topics:
  • A shifting 21st Century Global Economy
  • China – A New World Economy?
  • Future Knowledge Economy or Manufacturing Superpower?
  • Opportunity Wales – Collaborating for Success
  • Sharing China Expertise
  • Progress or Pitfall – the Next Steps
Details:

While for many, the perception of China is of a vast country which is still primarily rural, the reality is rapidly changing. China has a dynamic economy, with a rate of growth equal to that experienced by Japan in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Having just overtaken the UK as the world’s fourth-largest economy, it is expected that, in the next 40 years, it could become the world’s number one.

The opportunities offered by such a new, booming economy are huge. China is a country with a culture and systems which, because of their unfamiliarity to many, can discourage collaboration. Our presentations this evening will aim to highlight the benefits which can be gained by working with Chinese organisations and provide you with the inspiration for, and routes to, collaboration in this market.

    Confessions of a Venture Technologist.
Lessons and Observations from the World of Innovation

    Timothy Brundle
    (Director, Marketing Group, DDA)

The evening’s presentation features the confessions of a venture technologist: Marketing Director of the DDA, Timothy Brundle. The DDA is the UK’s leading provider of technology-based innovation and maintains a network that connects 3,500 businesses each year to innovative technology.

Timothy will be sharing observations from various technology ventures through a number of creative themes:

    Topics:
  • ‘Being Miss World’ looks at the importance of the need to travel and meet people in the pursuit of technological competitiveness.

  • ‘The Foresight Saga’ discusses the significance of market foresight and technology road-mapping prior to investment.

  • ‘The Appliance of Science’ will highlight that, for good technology, you need good science. Poor science gets you nowhere. But how can you undertake a useful assessment?

  • ‘Easy as Pi’ demonstrates with a case study lesson that financial planning for technology commercialisation programmes can be notoriously difficult.

  • ‘Did Philip Scofield invent the iPod?’ takes a light hearted look at when, on April Fools Day 1989, the BBC aired a new product which could store thousands of your favourite songs without the need for tape and which could be downloaded via the airwaves. Tim will discuss which came first – the market (the problem) or the technology (the solution).

    Get Smart. Get Innovation Savvy.
The skills to send you into the premier league

The evening’s presentation features one of the UK’s leading entrepreneurs, Ajaz Ahmed, who co-founded the internet service provider (ISP) Freeserve. After much persuasion, Dixons launched Freeserve in September 1998, and it became the UK’s largest ISP in just three short months. Through leadership and acute business acumen, Ajaz helped revolutionise internet usage in Europe and saw Freeserve through its flotation and the £1.6bn sale to Wanadoo.

Ajaz will be sharing his experiences in setting up Freeserve and the lessons he learnt. Since Freeserve, he has been working with a number of small companies and Ajaz will be discussing what it takes to make a company savvy and the tools required for market success.

    Topics:
  • What it takes to become a successful entrepreneur
  • How to make your company savvy
