Slugbiz

University experts are often called upon to conduct research on behalf of businesses, providing companies with valuable new knowledge, which can be exploited commercially.

One award-winning example involves research in Cardiff School of Biosciences on behalf of Compton Developments Ltd, which has led to the development and production of environmentally-friendly slug and snail repellants.

Compton Developments Ltd have wide-ranging interests including the provision of research funding and venture capital, property investment and development, insurance and ceramics.

They commissioned Cardiff University experts to develop and refine novel slug repellents.

Current methods of control predominantly rely on the application of poison baits, which are both unreliable and pose risks to other creatures.

The company wanted to investigate the development of non-toxic repellents based on natural plant products with a view to creating a new company in a new field.

The Company acknowledged the achievements of researchers Professor Ifor Bowen and Dr Ahmed Ali exceeded all expectations, and earned the Cardiff University Innovation Network Prize. The research has now led to the marketing of the new product as Slugbiz.
