Towering Capability

Jonathan Adams, Capita Percy Thomas architect of the Wales Millennium Centre, describes how the MEC (Manufacturing Engineering Centre) helped solve a complex design problem.

“Our proposal for Landmark Wales was a glazed tower constructed using a very delicate and transparent form of structure called a grid shell. The competition had a very tight timescale, and by the time Alex Beleschenko and myself had come to a conclusion about the form of the structure there was only a few days left to get a model made.

Once we had worked out the translation format with MEC, the process of manufacturing the model was incredibly fast - a couple of days from start to finish, and the end result was remarkably precise and clean, perfect for our needs.

With hindsight we can say for sure that it could not really have been done any other way, so we were really grateful to MEC for their expertise and for their generous constructive advice. We look forward to working with them again”.
