The Cardiff University Innovation Prize is presented annually in recognition of outstanding innovation by a company participating in the Innovation Network. This unique trophy has been sponsored by Cardiff based MEM Group plc, designed by Grid Xitec Ltd of Usk and manufactured in collaboration with our Manufacturing Engineering Centre at Cardiff University. It is a dynamic sculpture that responds to movement and vibration in the environment with a changing visible laser light pattern.

Legal & General is a leading UK financial services company with a medical underwriting centre in Cardiff and Claims department in Hove both currently involved in the collaboration with Cardiff University. Medical Underwriting and Claims validation are both specialist skills unique within Financial Services.

In 2002, Legal & General approached Cardiff University’s School of Psychology and Cardiff Centre for Lifelong Learning to develop a ground-breaking course. The “Medical Foundations for Underwriting” course has allowed significant numbers of staff to be trained and integrated simultaneously. The aims of this collaboration were met and have now been far exceeded. The success of the initial course has led to the development of a Health Claims Management Course and the significant enhancement of a further medical underwriting course.

The courses consolidate knowledge and understanding of factors important in risk assessment and provides a solid platform of knowledge relevant to medico-legal matters, risk assessment and insurance medicine. Specifically, they:

  • Enhance knowledge and understanding of commonly encountered diseases, disorders and syndromes which will improve decision-making in claims assessment;
  • facilitates the gathering of relevant medical and other information;
  • provides for the critical appraisal of medical reports and data in the context of medical underwriting and medical illness claims.

These innovative courses are run over 25/30 weeks and deliver a series of customised, high quality, lecture-based presentations and workshops. Consisting of occupational and insurance-relevant presentations, they are delivered by an experienced team of established clinicians and academics. The courses are accredited through Cardiff University.

Furthermore, these courses (the first to be approved by the Assurance Medical Society) have been instrumental in developing a change in how training is undertaken within the departments of Legal & General and have had a positive impact on customer service and costs. The courses have been jointly organised by Professor Peter Halligan of the School of Psychology and Honorary Professor Mansel Aylward CB together with Clare Sinclair from Cardiff University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning.
