Dr Devin Sapsford, Cardiff School of Engineering and Dr Ian Watson; The Coal Authority
A 2011 Innovation Award has been presented to The Coal Authority and Cardiff University’s School of Engineering for their collaboration aimed at developing new treatment technology to remove impurities and toxins in water discharging from former coalmines.
The project saw University academics work alongside experts from The Coal Authority at former UK coal mines - including Six Bells Colliery in Abertillery - to design and create a more effective and financially viable way of treating and improving water quality at these sites, addressing both public health challenges and better safeguarding the environment.
This new technology means that many of the more difficult sites can now be treated, both in Wales and in the remainder of the UK, with an opportunity to lead on this challenge globally as other mining sites close worldwide.
