The 2011 Innovation Prize has been awarded to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for its strategic partnership with Cardiff University which helped smooth the significant expansion of ONS into South Wales and is developing the highly-skilled graduates necessary for a major government department.
The ONS teamed up with Cardiff School of Mathematics to work on a number of projects including the creation of a new MSc in Operational Research and Applied Statistics. Designed with significant input from ONS to ensure that it met their needs, this vocationally-oriented course offers joint sessions as well as lectures which are delivered by ONS staff.
The MSc course is just one aspect of what is a multilayered, multidisciplinary collaboration covering activities as diverse as research, staff secondments, student placements and joint seminars in subject areas ranging from recession, social and workplace well-being to data access and health. The collaboration has also involved the Schools of Business, Social Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine and City and Regional Planning.
Recent co-working initiatives include a project on the “Contemporary Science of Wellbeing” which also involves Techniquest, one of Cardiff’s Beacon for Public Engagement Partners.
